Just 8 km away from the town of Ica, in southern Peru, can be found the attractive desert haven of Huacachina. Designed around a small natural lake and enclosed by tremendous sand hills that stretch several hundred feet high, Huacachina has the looks and feel of a distant Saharan outpost, but actually is only an hour’s drive away from the Pacific coast. Huacachina has long been a vacationer location for rich local family members from the nearby city of Ica, and lately a significant location for sandborders who travel from all around the world to ride the peaks.
The oasis is generally a selection of hotels and dining places around a blue-green lagoon enclosed by huge sand hills, with a lasting inhabitants of around 100, who rely entirely on tourism.
The haven prospered in the Forties and Nineteen fifties as a vacation for the Peruvian elite and obtained a certain popularity through travel and leisure marketing strategies in the 90's. These days it is a backpacker’s paradise and a top destination for sandboarding and dunebuggy trips. But tourism is taking its cost on the lagoon.
Groundwater intake has triggered the level of Huacachina’s lagoon to drain considerably. For the past several years, the lagoon is fed by water from other resources to prevent it from drying up.
Called the "Oasis of America," Huacachina is one of the few staying natural oases in Northern and Southern The united states.
